I have never met Ben and Madeleine Chapman, however on the basis of their wines, have assumed their hospitable disposition. The kind of folk who craft their wines for friends, and, when given a glass, invite you into said circle.
Welland Valley & Valley Shiraz 2023
91 Points | $30
Lustrous with a deep purple crimson. Aromas long and strong – a preliminary meatiness, olive tapenade and plum evolves with depth and richness. Berry compote, Sambuca, cedarwood and hints of polish. Despite all it alludes to, the wine is buoyant, soft and easy to approach. Its fruits ripe – a medley of black and blue, its tannins silken, and its finish the semblance of blackberry pie strewn with baking spice. Well made and consumer considerate. A Barossa Shiraz with millennial appeal.
Welland Valley & Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
90 Points | $30
A kiss of lipstick crimson. Forthwith Cabernet charm; pine, spearmint (fresh and cooling) juniper, blackcurrant and clove. Initial fruit sweetness, suspended in pleasant upfront weight – the wine is soft and glides along a ribbon of acidity. Gently the flavours flicker; blackberry, blueberry, mint and salted licorice. Together pettering off to a pastille powder finish. Contrary to its youth, its feathery tannins are an indication of a wine for the here and now. A testament to live in the moment.
