The second release of this extraordinary Rhone/Aussie blend, crafted by two of the world’s great wineries, Jaboulet and Penfolds, has the added benefit of both regions enjoying stellar vintages. The 2022 Grange should be one of the very best in many years (although whether it will match the glorious 2021 remains to be seen), while 2022 is a cracking year for La Chapelle and the Rhone Valley. The blend is 100% Shiraz and an even split between the two countries. The oak reflects each discrete component – 100% new American oak for the Grange half; 15% new French oak for that from La Chapelle. Does it match the hype? Absolutely.
The colour is an opaque black/blue. The immediate impression is of a wine which is both plush and concentrated. We have aromas weaving through dried herbs, very dark chocolate, cloves, aniseed, smoked meats, plums, blackberries, cassis, coffee beans, leather and root vegetables. There is impeccable balance here, while the wine retains a sense of refinement at every stage. Focus, serious length and intensity, through to fine, powdery tannins, the oak integration is exemplary with hints of sour cherries emerging on the finish. A seamless and seductive wine which will offer pleasure for at least the next two decades.
