Donato D’Angelo Calice Aglianico del Vulture 2019

Share

One hundred percent Aglianico grown in the central southern Italian region of Basilicata at around 500m elevation in vineyards, this time from a younger vine selection. Well-learned traditional winemaking bring out the earthy nuances of the grape which sees this undergo fermentation in concrete vessels before a minimum of 18 months in larger format wooden casks. The wine tends towards savoury layers like mushroom and crumbled soils, and there’s plenty of varietally stamped white pepper as well, seasoning its core blue and black berry flavours. Even they are intrinsically foresty. Every thing here is beautifully integrated: flesh, pulp, flavour and texture, its tannins complete and settled. Buy several to watch them develop majestically over a decade.
