Reed Knife Edge Shiraz 2020

Shiraz is a remarkably versatile variety. It can be like a massive, comforting hug filled with sweet baking spices or something else entirely. It’s easy in Australia, with all the rich South Australian wines at our fingertips, to forget that there are many layers to be found in this noble grape.

Sierra Reed has been quietly making a name for herself in recent years. Based in Victoria, she sources fruit locally and interstate as well as doing regular vintages overseas (COVID-pending). Her minimal intervention approach to this shiraz from the Grampians involves gentle old oak ageing, allowing the cool climate fruit to shine through.

As it hits the glass you immediately know that you are in new territory; bright ruby, and with a paler depth than its inky siblings across the South Australian border. Shiraz is one of the few truely aromatic reds and this wine delivers with brooding violet perfume. There’s a hint of candied blueberries before an earthy core of dark cherries, cacao nibs and black peppercorns. Distinctly medium bodied, it dances across the palate offering up ripe cranberry acidity and silky tannins.

Pair its freshness with a rich lamb roast and piles of roast potatoes for a gorgeous balance.
