Reschke Bull Trader Shiraz 2020

Share

This terrific Shiraz hails from a single Coonawarra vineyard, planted 35 years ago. It sits on the famed terra rossa soils. The Coonawarra region was famous for Shiraz long before Cabernet claimed the crown and this is too often forgotten. A percentage of whole berries are included in the fermentation to extend the time it takes. 10-15 days on skins before a gentle pressing by bag press. Pressings are returned to aid in the tannin structure. Maturation takes place in American and French oak hogsheads, for a period of 18 months.

Deep maroon in colour, this is big and bold for Coonawarra, but none the worse for that. Chocolate, black fruits, cassis, rose petals. This has legs and it will surely age well over the next decade. The palate sees some red cherry notes and dried herbs to the fore. Mid length, with fine tannins and good acidity, this can be enjoyed at any stage over the next ten years.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
