Of the two top-shelf Barossa Valley Shiraz by 1847 Wines, this and the Grand Pappy’s, the First Pick is predominantly matured in American oak which suits the style, perhaps a reflection of other elite Barossa based Shiraz, perhaps a reminder of the days when big timber was all the rage. This is huge across all its parts, fleshy, toasty and charry, hyper intense, its black fruit core powerful enough to poke through all the secondary savouries to provide a fuller vinous picture with some of that American oak vanilla spice richness partly camouflaging a robust tannin finish. Take it all in – this is how heavyweight Barossa Shiraz can knock your socks off.
