Barossa Boy Young Wisdom Mataro 2020

If Mataro sounds like a new grape for you, it might be because it has a number of pseudonyms. Also named Mourvèdre and Monastrell, it’s a key player in ubiquitous GSM blends where it adds earthy, savoury tannins and bold fruit. This single variety example highlights aromas of dried blackberries, poached plums and star anise with a quirky, savoury note of bresaola. It’s rich and almost sweet with the plushness of the fruit. It’s not sweet though, just a trick of the mind played by juicy fruit flavours and a seductive, mouthfilling concentration. It finishes long and bright with chalky tannins and well-integrated acidity.
