Cape Mentelle HH (Icon) Shiraz 2020

While this wine scored on a par with the standard Shiraz, it is undoubtedly built for the long haul and in time, the score for this wine should climb. Deep opaque maroon, the nose is redolent with notes of fruitcake, plums, hints of charcoal, chocolate, soy, blackcurrants and tobacco leaves. Good concentration, though not quite to the extent of the 2018 version hereof. The trade-off is that this is more approachable and generous. It really does need time and there is certainly room for this to impress even more than it does now. Anyone leaving it for two to three years will benefit from that when they come to open their bottles, which can then be enjoyed over the following decade.
