For many of us Cape Mentelle is the ‘classic white shirt’ of producers in Margaret River – timeless, reliable and goes with everything. They have been quietly toiling away for the past few years and, with the addition of Ben Cane to the winemaking team, they are gaining impetus.
The fruit for this wine comes from three vineyards in the southern half of Margaret River – cooler sites that are more likely to produce wines that have freshness, crunch and mineral complexity. These are the styles that show the progression and serious nature of SBS blends from the region.
Aromatics here are vibrant and keen – white florals, lean passionfruit with green papaya and a slight sea spray note that speaks of place. The palate is defined by line and length, with bright energy and layers of fruit. Something about the texture and generosity of this wine lures you back for more, suggesting a second glass and a plate of something…fancy, oysters or an excellent chicken sandwich, would be more than welcome with this cleverly made example of an iconic Margaret River style.
