Shiraz and mataro – I wish there were more of these wines around. Shiraz provides the fleshy layers of flavour while mataro adds an intriguing savoury and spicy edge. It can produce some breathtaking wines – Wendouree from the Clare Valley probably the country’s best. But this robust red is a great introduction to the style that is both deeply coloured and flavoured. There is an intense core of dark fruits – blackberry, blueberry and cola aromas plus some toasty oak. But it is on the palate where this wine really hits the spot again with layer after layer of hearty dark fruits but also with a backbone of old leather. Tannins are also quite supple which makes it approachable and perfect for a Tomahawk steak, hot off the grill.
