The Mountain D was first released in 1937 as a blended vineyard wine, crafted to express the richer, full-bodied character of Shiraz within the range. Here cassis and blackberries are met with firm woody spice, cinnamon bark and clove. However it is the more sinewy tannins and rounded curves with the lasting albeit fresh acidity that fleshes out the mid palate which speaks more to the full bodied style. This is still reticent in the Mount Pleasant style, nothing is brash or unnecessarily bold. Some soft licorice, caraway seed and black tea on the finish. This is shining this vintage and is perhaps one of the most assured examples of Mountain D I have tasted. Drink now or cellar upwards of 10, 15, 20 years further. Ideal with ox tail cooked low and slow.
