MT Wines Yarra Valley/Heathcote Sangiovese Shiraz 2022

Share

Blend of Yarra Valley Sangiovese (75%) and Heathcote Shiraz (25%). The Shiraz is grown at Whistling Eagle Vineyard on ancient deep red Cambrian soil in Colbinabbin, Heathcote wine region. The Shiraz was destemmed, cold soaked, spent two and a half weeks on skins during which a mix of pumpovers and hand plunging was performed once a day. Both wines were made separately, aged in seasoned French oak barrels for 10 months. Blending happened prior to bottling. Unfined and unfiltered.

A rich and complex nose announces the wine immediately after opening. The addition of 25% Shiraz keeps the wine more in the fruiyt spectrum than with the Sangiovese/Shiraz blend, and gives it added depth. It’s juicy and full flavoured, with a slight sourness to the acid, but showing intense fruit characters, particularly in the dark realm (mulberry, black cherry), plus raspberry, liquorice, herbs and pepper. The finish is long and I imagine it will continue to develop beautifully for several more years.
