Thompson Estate The Specialist Margaret River Chardonnay 2021

On a number of levels, it’s hard not to be impressed by this Margaret River reserve-style Chardonnay. The 2021 vintage was undeniably challenging following the wettest February in 20 years. On paper, it’s not the brightest forecast. In the glass, it’s another matter entirely. Plenty of finesse and fine fruit flavour delivery is on show. Honeydew melon, lemon, grapefruit, oatmeal and almond aromas are clean, bright and lifted. Palate is well-structured with brisk acidity providing the path for the fruit, fine featured with lovely, arresting citrus qualities aligned with a gentle nuttiness and a touch of crème brûlée, vanilla oak. Offers a pithy grapefruit bite to close, so refreshing. Should age a treat if you would like to see how it opens up further. Otherwise, enjoy this stylish Chardonnay now.
