Dreaded Friend by ChaLou Viognier 2021

On a recent trip to Orange, the visit at ChaLou was one of the most illuminating – winemakers Nadja Wallington and Steve Mobbs crafting wines with personality that showcase a modern take to Orange, as well from their vineyards at Canowindra. The Dreaded Friend Viognier comes from Orange and is a pretty, restrained style – far from the almost decadent, high alcohol wines often seen from this variety. There are layers of stone fruits and subtle floral elements, the cool ferment in older oak retaining aromatics but also providing texture and savoury elements on the palate. There is underlying elegance and refinement which makes for a food-friendly, and gently aromatic style well suited to seafood dishes, with a little bit of spice if it takes your fancy.
