Gibson Wines Discovery Road Nero d’Avola 2019

Young Nero d’Avola can be hard work with plenty of acid and tannins to burn. But here we have a bright and more supple bistro red style with good complexity that is made to please at a young age. There is good depth of colour which is followed by ripe, generous and multilayered fruits – blackberry, liquorice and jam upfront but then some of nero’s more savoury side comes out to play with earthy touches. It’s a nice counterpoint to all that ripe dark fruit. It’s then bold but supple on the palate, more mid-weight than full, and supported by toasty oak before finishing with decent length. It’s a wine built for a good time, not a long time, which it well and truly delivers.
