Golden Grove Estate Malbec 2021

One of the so-called ‘Strange Birds” grape varieties of the Granite Belt’s wine region is Malbec and the high altitude and granitic soils allow this variety to express itself nicely. Remarkably inky in appearance, this wine displays aromas of blueberry, violet, dark chocolate, and vanilla. Naturally up-front and abrupt with tannins of solid impact, the greatest assets of this Malbec are the back palate fruit weight and its drive. Homemade tacos are on the menu. I used pan-fried chicken, chilli with carne, black beans, jalapeno, guacamole, corn tortillas, lettuce, and Mexican rice. The wine interacts superbly with this explosive combination, bringing out the blueberry and vanilla elements. The judicious oak handling and clever blending produces long lasting plummy flavours showing a great composition. Try out a Malbec next time you enjoy Mexican food — it will surprise you big time.
