Gundog Estate The Lived Experience Hunter Valley Shiraz 2019

The Lived Experience is a super project explained very well by my colleague Jeni Port here. Suffice to say that Matt Burton from Gundog Esate is one of the good guys in our industry who I met when we judged together at the Hunter Valley Wine Show many moons ago and 100% of the profits from this wine will be donated to Path 2 Change, helping out the homeless and disadvantaged in the Hunter Valley. It did not surprise me one bit when I read the whole story of The Lived Experience wine and Matt’s other work helping with fundraising for this noble charity.

So now to the wine which is quite big and tannic for the Hunter, which is a bit of a theme from the 2019 vintage in the Hunter, but the wine still carries a strong regional identity. It opens with rich dark cherry, mulberry and new leather aromas with balanced toasty oak. The palate then moves more into the red earth spectrum, with juicy acidity and chewy tannins carrying the fruit to a lingering finish. It’s young and you definitely get the feeling it will improve significantly as it settles over the next two to three years.
