Harewood Estate Denmark Chardonnay 2018

There is an interesting little story emerging in the world of Western Australian Chardonnay, including a healthy competition between the Margaret River and those upstarts down in the Great Southern, nipping at their heels.

Margaret River has of course been the leader, and rightfully so. But the Great Southern is coming hard with fine, detailed and modern Australian chardonnay styles. James Kellie at Harewood Estate is one of the leaders.

This 2018 Harewood Estate Denmark Chardonnay screams Great Southern with its finely-detailed honeydew melon and citrus fruits lifted by spicy oak and barrel ferment complexity. It is youthful and juicy, a bit Mâcon in style for the Francophiles out there, with a seamless, understated, acid-driven palate. Young and tight, although it hints strongly where it is going, it is an aperitif style right now but will build some more flavour and texture with a little time in bottle.
