Aussie Grenache is having its day in the spotlight, with wonderfully juicy and bright examples readily available in shops and restaurant wine lists. We’re seeing modern wines of crunch and freshness, jam-packed full of cherries and berries that match a wide array of food, challenging Grenache’s history as a workhorse variety. The Rough Diamond offers cherries and brambles in abundance, with dark chocolate, Dutch cocoa and liquorice as a savoury contrast. The palate is ripe and juicy with more of those lovely berries notes and a hint of tobacco. The structure is a little more intense than its stablemate, with a steely frame and savoury, definitive tannin finish. This wine would be heavenly with a steak and kidney butter puff pie, roasted beetroots on the side.
