Mark Haisma somewhat gallantly planted Shiraz in Burgundy in 2018 and lived to tell the tale. Here it’s blended with Gamay. Charred meat and pepper mingle with plum, blackberry, tomato bush and campfire ash. The palate is cool and lifted while still juicy and darkly toned, showing its breezy 12% ABV with freshness and verve. Dark cherry, pepper, tomato leaf and blackberry sit high in the mouth before being framed by fine chalky tannins and juicy acidity to good length. Some plum and ash notes in the mouth perfume. This feels at once ripe and fresh with a puckish appeal.
