Bold, sweet and sour fruit flavours headlined by cherry – what’s not to like here? The Sicilian grape has made itself right at home in McLaren Vale, lapping up the warmth and repaying growers with a medium-bodied, sinewy-tannined, supple, easy flowing wine like this. Lively in black and red fruit and full of youthful bounce. Black plum, mulberry, red cherry dripped in chocolate (imagine Cherry Ripe) and lifted spice . . . and that’s just the bouquet. Candied red fruits and a touch of confection meet the tastebuds alongside maraschino cherry, dried fruits, dried herbs with a hint of bay leaf in a complex array of flavours fashioned around smart, integrated oak. A seriously good combination of rich flavours that deserves further time in the bottle.
