We looked at the 2019 not so long ago, and loved it. Could the 2020 match it? Absolutely. These guys make some of the top Malbec going around. Margaret River might be famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay but it proves yet again that it is perhaps our ultimate allrounder for different varieties, although the Yarra Valley might want a say on that. ‘Fidium’ is Latin for ‘attuned’, meaning that Australian winemakers have officially run out of suitable names for their wines. Still, as we always say, it is what is in the bottle.
A dark, opaque maroon, this is big and bold with some attractive chocolate notes, black fruits and leather, cloves and tobacco leaf. Good focus and plenty of grip, with some real length. The long finish shows more and more dark chocolate emerging. This has a good eight to ten years ahead of it. Good stuff. It is not hard to see why this variety is so popular as a blending component, but wines like this confirm it can also work as a single variety. For me, a touch up on the 2019.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
