Old vines count for plenty but for Grenache, particularly, old vines are essential to lift wines past simple jubey fruits. The old vines give Grenache its personality – its savoury even rustic edge.
This wine is made from 63 year old vines from the Smart vineyard in Clarendon. It is a bright deep cherry colour with the fruit big, juicy and ripe. It is a very pure expression of Grenache with boysenberry, raspberry and dark cherry fruits with very subtle, spicy oak. Super youthful, it is almost grapey but with touches of earth and spice. There is also a juiciness of fruit and great concentration which with plenty of sandy tannins drive a long and satisfying finish. You can get yours here.
