Passel Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Share

10 months in French Oak Barrique (35% new).  In a world obsessed with youth, it’s a delight to find current-release wines that have a few years of maturity, especially for age-worthy varieties such as Cabernet.  Still a shade of vibrant garnet in the glass, with a nose to match. Lifted and bright red mulberry, framed by black plum skin, Dutch liquorice and an underbelly of crushed West Australian peppermint tree foliage. There’s a compelling subtle smokiness here, too, and a crushed peppercorn spice. The palate is elegant and finely structured with a taut and lacy acid line, fine-boned chalky tannins, and a refreshing cooling finish. Unequivocally a Margaret River Cabernet, though one with delicacy and finesse.  The palate is where this really steps up and the joy is found.
