Gamay gets a step up and it’s a big step. Starts off in brilliant purple hues and a super friendly approach which immediately wins the drinker over. So far, it has fulfilled the trad Gamay that we almost expect and certainly want and need. But, and it’s a big but, there is a lot left in the tank, a lovely richness across the middle palate that then takes off. Amid the ripe berries – the black cherry, plum, raspberry – lies a source of scents and flavours that come to life bringing with them florals, spice and hints of pepper and sprigs of thyme. It’s a joy to taste with a light savoury earthiness that is beautifully offset by the juiciness of the fruit, the plush mouthfeel and the fine tannins. It’s a joy to see a producer taking Gamay seriously and showing us just what this great variety is capable of.
