Yelland & Papps Single Vineyard Old Vine Grenache 2024

Share

From dry-grown Vine Vale vines planted by the Schild family in 1956. The deep sandy soils are captured beautifully here, with a wine of elegant perfume. Wild raspberry, blood orange, violets, redcurrant, crushed strawberry, white pepper, warm sand and whispers of smoke. It’s alluring and lifted with an enticing mix of bright red fruits and savouriness. The palate is lifted and buoyant with a cool mineral finesse – redcurrant, violets, raspberry coulis, white pepper, warm-sand earthiness, a glimmer of rhubarb. It glides through the mouth with confidence and poise, displaying intensity but never weightiness. The tannins are firm but fine-boned and powdery, wrapping it all up and carrying it to a long finish. There’s a Nebbiolo sensibility here in the wine’s ethereal lift and anchoring powdery tannins. This is Barossa presented so beautifully – reflective of place, with intensity and not even a suggestion of ponderousness. Modern Australian Grenache right in the zone. Bravo.
