If one wished to compare the two GSM releases under the Pertaringa label, I think today it would be line ball. Both have a good future, but in the long run, one suspects that this wine has even more staying power. The Grenache and Mourvèdre were sourced from various vineyards in McLaren Vale, while the Shiraz came from the Picnic Grounds Vineyard on Kay’s Road, a property once owned by Thomas Hardy. Fermentation and maturation of the varieties is done separately, with the maturation for eight months. Dark maroon, the nose reveals aromas of blackberries, beef stock, black cherries, dried herbs, mushrooms, animal skins and wild raspberries. There is good length here and the wine is taut and poised with good focus and firm tannins. It does have a slight savouriness and austerity to it at this stage. It should continue to drink well for the next ten to fifteen years.
