Bleasdale Wild Fig S.G.M 2020

It’s hard to deny the intensity of Langhorne Creek’s red varieties. The original plantings were grown for fortified wines and, thanks to the likes of Bleasdale and others, are still being made into those show-stopping sweet wines. The creek also has an abundance of high-quality straight varieties and blends.

The 2020 S.G.M opens up with a cordial concentration of fruit. Blood plums, boysenberry and the sugary staining syrup running from a warm blackberry pie hot out of the oven. Really, it’s that evocative. Then the savoury spices come through; cassia bark, grated nutmeg, and star anise, only to surprise me more with the strength of the shiraz shining through on the palate with olive tapenade, gravel and tar, and brightness of acidity.

This is a wine that comes together like a 1000 piece puzzle, everything fits in its place and the picture is something to sit back and admire.
