Patricia chardonnay now belongs firmly in Tasmania. The last few releases have seen grape sourcing heading south to Brown Brothers’ Hazards and Kayena vineyards, and the results have brought a superfine purity of flavour, not to mention, a terrific energy from cool climate acidity. The 2020 release is all about the fruit for me. Complex aromas of white nectarine, peach skin, lemon and lime with almond meal and sea spray/rockpool notes. Riveting. Quite plush, almost luxurious, to taste with a lemon buttery-ness, nougat and almond mealiness that is kept in check nicely, firmly, by brisk acidity. It becomes tightly focused and trim to close. Oak is similarly well-managed.
