Greenock Creek Mataro 2020

I really did not know what to expect here. Mataro can be quite subtle and is easily overwhelmed by a heavy hand in the winery. But the winemaking team of Alex Peel and Peter Atyeo have outdone themselves. The colour is generous and with a bit of air it instantly launches into mataro’s savoury soul with animal fur, ground spice and earthy aromas on a bed of dark cherry fruits. There is then a distinctly French edge to the palate with its bone dry and acid driven structure which is then swept up in waves of dark fruits before a long and ethereal finish underscored by quite firm tannins. It’s a super example of Australian Mataro that will age well.
