There are not too many serious sparkling winemakers in WA – using all the various techniques seen in Champagne – but Howard Park is giving it a red hot go.
Fruit for this wine comes from Mount Barker, down near the Great Southern Ocean, which gives it a very good dose of elegance and finesse which is clear from the first sip. The wine is crisp, vibrant and youthful with concentrated and complex fruit including brioche, honey, strawberry and citrus aromas. The wine is dry, but also textural and quite full-bodied for sparkling wine, making a powerful and unusually food-friendly sparkling wine style that finishes long and silky. It is the kind of sparkling wine that would beautifully match up with triple cream or washed rinded cheese.
