Mitchell Wines McNicol Clare Valley Riesling 2012

Share

The chance to pick up a mature Clare Valley Riesling for this sort of money is one that no one should miss. You’ll either be a fan of the style, which makes this a no-brainer, or it will be new to you. in which case, you have a treat ahead. Do not miss it. No further cellaring needed, but it will surely go another decade if you do want to put it aside. 2012 was always a highly regarded vintage and it is easy to see why.

This wine comes from a single vineyard, never irrigated, which sits above their Watervale vines. Fermented in both French oak and stainless steel before ageing in a 3,000 litre oak barrel, on lees.

A lovely deep gold colour, the maturity of this wine gives aromas of lemon butter on toast, florals, ripe stone fruit, beeswax and freshly sliced pineapples. This is a seamless Riesling, still offering a flick of good acidity. Great intensity and great length, this is a superb mature white.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
