Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Riesling 2026

A most compelling sweet Clare Valley Riesling that has proven to be a consistent performer over the years. Mid-yellow with green edges. Candied fruits, dried apricot, orange peel, quince, lemon curd and creme brûlée aromas entice. Gloriously sweet to taste and well defined by clean, bright acidity – herein lies an impressive balance, to be sure.  A lingering depth of lime marmalade, quince and crystallised citrus and mango with cumquat rind fills the palate with hedonistic pleasure. Bring out the apple tart tatin and enjoy!

NB: The term ‘cordon cut’ or “cane cut” is Australian and refers to cutting the canes carrying fruit, close to harvest and letting the berries shrivel, dry and concentrate, thus building sugar concentration. The early cutting of canes also contributes extra acidity.

Jeni Port is one of Australia’s top wine communicators. Based in Melbourne, Jeni created the first wine column in the (then) Sun News-Pictorial before moving over to The Age and becoming that paper’s longest-serving wine writer. Over the years she has written for most Australian wine magazines and these days calls WinePilot home. She is also a Tasting Panel member on the Halliday Wine Companion. She was named Wine Communicator of the Year and Legend of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in 2014 and in 2018 Legend of the Vine. She is a founding board member of Australian Women In Wine and is the co-deputy chair of Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards and China’s Wine List of the Year Awards.
