A touch of VA opens the dance, then quickly shifting into fruit territory, unveiling a decadent spectrum of fresh mulberries, bilberries, blackberries and blackcurrants, interwoven with savoury notes of iodine and soy, alongside oak-derived aromas of Tahitian vanilla pod and dark cocoa nibs. The palate is far more restrained than the nose suggests, its fruit lying beneath impressive density and prominent, multilayered tannins. Yes, it’s luxurious and, at times, unforgiving in its youthful power and muscular frame, but you can already see its shape and pedigree. There is continuity through the finish, finesse beneath the structure, and a purposeful drive that, given time, will come to define this Barossan.

Marananga is never short on colour or boldness of personality. Picked ripe, it has the capacity to see extended time in French and American oak – 16 months in new and seasoned this year – bringing a full and generous mouthful of flavour, penetrating in intensity, even in its youth. Plum, blackberry aromas with chocolate, liquorice, cola, red earth. undergrowth, leaf. Oak-framed dark fruits guide the palate embedded in spice and herbs, chocolate, a touch of fennel seed and undergrowth. Smooth, textural, richly defined and, as always, distinctly Marananga. Still early days, best to send it to the cellar. 2026 – 2044. 96 Points

100% Marananga Shiraz matured for 16 months in French (3% new) and American (2% new) oak hogsheads. Marananga’s trademark richness is on full display, yet the wine avoids excess through impressive freshness and structure. Blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry combine with dark chocolate, liquorice, graphite and violet. The palate is plush and generous, carrying dark berry fruit through a core of cocoa, black olive and spice before fine tannins tighten the finish. Richly flavoured without becoming heavy. 94 Points

100% Shiraz, maturation was for sixteen months in a mix of French (3% new, 61% older) and American (2% new and 34% older) oak hogsheads. Dark plum with a deep red blood red rim, this is bold, brooding and solid with aromas weaving through chocolate, cassis, dark plums, mocha, bitter coffee, blackberries, tobacco leaves and with a lovely choc/cherry note emerging on the palate. Youthful but outstanding. Rich and ripe with serious length, concluding with powdery tannins on a very long finish, this is finely balanced with a revolving door of delicious flavours. There is a character which I can only think of as wild raspberry swirl on the palate. If possible, leave it in the cellar for at least twenty-four months and then drink it over the next twenty-five years. A cracker. 2026 – 2051. 94 Points
