Schubert Estate The Gosling Shiraz 2017

Share

Cute name, but The Gosling should not necessarily be viewed as a baby version of The Lone Goose. The price tag and the style of wine dismisses that notion. It is lighter on its feet, sure, but there is plenty of vinous integrity and grit to be explored. Not to mention, ageing ability. The winemaking style remains the same with fruit sourced from a single vineyard, an alcohol reading of 15% and use of the basket press (it’s a celebrated part of Schubert winemaking which is given prominence on the front label). Got to say that the richness of black fruits is met with a delightful flourish of five spice, clove and nutmeg that lifts the aroma and the palate. It’s a hugely appealing part of The Gosling, which together with well-integrated tannins and oak, brings life and freshness, not to mention a touch of elegance.
