Thamnus, part of the ocean-influenced Cape South Coast district, is relatively new to the Overberg wine scene. 10-hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fan across the lower slopes of the Klein River mountains, just outside of Stanford. A synergistic, regenerative concern, there are carbon sequestering sheep, beehives, and olive trees… It borrows its name from the land too, Orothamnus Zeyheri, a rare fynbos rose is found only in their boundaries as well as in the nearby nature reserve. Winemaker PJ Geyer brings his well-honed skills to this pastoral paradise, having worked for the Moueix family for eight years at Chateau Mazeyres, Fonroque and Moulin du Cadet. The 2022 opens with the freshness of an Overberg dawn; dewdrop, wet stone, fynbos and hints of ginger-thatch. Orange citrus, peach and melon deepen into the core, riven with an electric, cooling acidity. This is startlingly alive, and so of its place.
