Welland Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Share

The quality of Barossa Cabernet is a bit of a secret. While fame of the local shiraz is spread far and wide, relatively few know that Barossa Cabernet can, in the right vintages, be just as good. Kudos to the Welland team for having a crack, and it is a good one although the wine needs some time.

It is a forceful and impressive young red with lashings of fruit – blackberry and blackcurrant are duelling it out with an edge of dried herbs in the mix. It’s in the mouth things get serious with waves of long, structural tannins making the wine muscular, dense and even chewy. But the fruit is there to back it all up and it drives through to a long finish. If you want to tackle it now, do so with a big bloody steak, although this wine’s best years are still to come.
