Lively spiciness and all-round vibrancy suit the use of the term Syrah. To fully release those gorgeous spices, give it a few swishes or a decant and expect acacia, twig and leaf scents with bramble, black fruits, black olive and spice galore. Follow those spices – aniseed, cinnamon, nutmeg – they will take you to a palate both generous and nicely controlled in firm tannins, displaying just a hint of savouriness amid the dark fruits, cacao and earthy notes. Leafy bunchy notes add a lasting finishing touch.

Based in Melbourne, Jeni created the first wine column in the (then) Sun News-Pictorial before moving over to The Age and becoming that paper’s longest-serving wine writer. She was named Wine Communicator of the Year and Legend of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in 2014 and in 2018 Legend of the Vine. She is a founding board member of Australian Women In Wine and is the co-deputy chair of Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards and China’s Wine List of the Year Awards.
