Bellarmine Chardonnay 2019

Share

The Great Southern and Pemberton are some of the most exciting cool climate wine regions in Australia, with Bellarmine one of Pemberton’s best, run by ex-vet Dr Di Miller. Di brings a thought-provoking style to the region with her wines always subtle and understated. They can be easy to miss but are worth seeking out as they offer exceptional value.

This chardonnay is a great example; a gentle hand with oak has allowed the purity of the region’s cool climate chardonnay to shine through, although it needs a little time in the glass to come out of its shell. Bright mid straw, there are aromas of citrus, melon, mixed flowers and nougat with a dusting of spice from barrel ferment and maturation. It moves on to a generous palate that is wound up quite tight by tangy acidity, again oak just making a subtle impact. There is also an attractive savoury lees edge right on the finish that adds another layer to this finely crafted style. This wine is all about delicacy and detail so it will be best enjoyed with subtle seafood dishes.
