Carillion Fenestella Shiraz 2019

Share

The Davis family has had a long involvement in the wine industry and the Carillion Estate in the Orange region is part of that. If you think this is a new name to you, they are involved with the Tallavera Grove Vineyard in the Hunter Valley and in a partnership with that region’s star restaurant, Bistro Molines (if you have not been, add it to the bucketlist).

The Fenestella Shiraz represents the Hunter Valley in the Carillion portfolio and this wine is a fine example of what the excellent 2019 vintage can offer. It also exhibits the gentle influence of French oak. Coming from century old vines does not hurt, either. Purple/maroon in colour, there is an alluring nose with a mix of spices, dry herbs, florals, plums and raspberries. A seamless palate through to ever-so-fine tannins, on a very long finish. Bright, fresh, still young and with a promising future, there is a great deal to like about this wine which has a good decade ahead of it.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
