De Bortoli Heathcote Phi Syrah Grenache 2022

Share

Freemans Bridge Vineyard in Northern Heathcote was purchased by the De Bortoli family in 2017 and has been expanded with new vineyards and some replanting. Block 9 and 10 Syrah has a shallow horizon of deep red Cambrian soil over a substantial layer of near pure limestone. The vines are naturally low cropping and have very soil driven characteristics. Block 11 Grenache is grown on some blacker soils and produces wines with depth and perfume that is quite unique from other vineyards of Grenache in the region. 59% Syrah, 41% Grenache. Handpicked, 15-25% whole bunches included in ferments. Judicious plunging and turnovers. Pressed and matured in 1000L amphora for 8 months followed by 8 months in 500L French oak casks.’

This is the kind of drop for those who love spice not only in their food, but also in their wine. It’s bursting with blackcurrant and mulberry fruit, as well as pepper and baking spices, just a hint of toastiness, and lots of cocoa, game, smoke and shoe polish. The palate heightens the spice aspect, with dusty tannins and a rich, concentrated and juicy mouthfeel adding up to a thoroughly enjoyable drinking experience. It’s the kind of wine that shows well when it’s young but will reward those who cellar it for a few more years.
