Gundog Estate Gundaroo Riesling 2021

Gundog Estate is best known for their wines from the Hunter Valley. What is less well known is that Gundog source fruit from a whole bunch of regions, including the Yarra, Hilltops and Canberra District. And in Canberra they have got their own vineyard, north of Canberra city and in between Murrumbateman and Lake George. This is the first vintage of the Gundaroo Vineyard Riesling and it is a cracker to start. It’s also surprisingly Germanic in style for wines from this part of the world.

Super pale in colour, it opens with piquant and focussed aromas – florals with pear and limey notes just showing themselves in the background. It moves to a seriously moreish package – fresh, balanced fruits and gentle sweetness with lovely purity plus a barely noticeable alcohol of 8% are beautifully balanced in what is a delicious package. There is understated power too that really comes to the fore though its long and vibrant finish. Enjoy with whole baked Thai Barramundi.
