Gundog Estate Smoking Barrel Red 2021

Not sure why this Shiraz, a blend of fruit from the Hunter Valley and Hilltops regions, is labelled simply as a “red.” It undersells the quality of the wine and its impact when tasted – it’s a beaut. There’s a whole lot of lovely, sweet fruit on display to enjoy too; black and red berries congregate, wrapped in gentle spices and anise with chocolate notes. It’s young and full of life, not to mention showcases classy fruit. Vanillin oak works to the tune of the fruit, a wise winemaking move. Tannins are soft and gentle to the finish so it slips down so easily. Sure, you could age it further, but why would you? It’s singing right now.
