J Moreau Petit Chablis 2023

Share

The 2023 vintage in the Chablis region in France provided us with open, ripe and generous wines. Go back a couple of decades and, while most people may not have turned their nose up at a Petit Chablis, it is doubtful that there would have been overwhelming excitement. Today, things have changed. The wines coming from this region are of such superb quality, that they should be a focus for everyone. The team here have selected the Chardonnay grapes from two discrete areas in this sub-region to provide contrasting characteristics. The final wine is a cracker. Under agglomerated cork. Deep straw gold, there is a bright and fresh nose offering aromas of zesty citrus and limes, with hints of oyster shells and the merest touches of peaches. A supple texture, good length and intensity maintained along the journey all contribute to a thoroughly enjoyable wine. An issue for this vintage was acidity levels, however that does not appear to be an issue here. A lovely clean finish, the wine should drink most enjoyably over the next six to eight years.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
