Defining the overarching character of any region’s take on the ubiquitous Shiraz variety is fraught with over-generalising a style. If we take Knappstein’s approach to its estate Shiraz, it stands as a pretty smart reference point in terms of its medium-bodied balance of aromas, flavours, and textural feels. Put together from a mix of estate vineyards north and south in the region, the emphasis is on crimson berry and plum fruits providing top notes to a smatter of leaf and spice with a light dusting of lavender and violet florals, which layer flavour in the palate as the tannins add their structural crunch in the finish. A most enjoyable contemporary Shiraz.
