Leconfield Merlot 2022

It’s refreshing to discover an enticing bottling of this variety. This wine opens with aromas of ripe plum, tomato bush, capsicum, and a hint of black pepper. On the palate, it is smooth and supple, with al dente tannins and a concentrated core of dark fruit. It was paired with the house specialty—teriyaki chicken—a delicious match from the first bite. The soy sauce draws out the wine’s subtle sweetness, while the walnut and broccoli of the dish add a pleasing crunch that complements the wine’s texture. As the red onion, carrot, and sauce meld together, their slippery mouthfeel interacts beautifully with the wine’s structure, and the smoky oak enhances the umami-rich glaze. The pairing is articulate and unpretentious, offering simple pleasures that are often overlooked. This is a wine to enjoy without ceremony—balanced, flavourful, and easy to drink. Sometimes, it’s these humble, joyful combinations that deserve the most appreciation.
