Life is tough for barbera. While its sibling from up in Piedmont, nebbiolo, hogs the limelight poor old Barbera often gets ignored. But that’s actually all BS. While nebbiolo might cellar for longer, for younger drinking barbera is an absolute star with its juicy acidity and fleshy fruit making for some of the world’s greatest food wines. So the long and the short of it is get on board with barbera especially from the Adelaide Hills which is among the country’s leading regions for the variety.
This is a user-friendly version and action packed full of ripe blackberry and dark cherry fruits supported nicely by old oak and a dusting of dried herbs. The palate is then dry, compact and bright – punchy dark fruit pastille flavours matched up well with grainy tannins that help to drive a long finish. It’s delicious and could easily handle a light chill in the middle of Summer if that takes your fancy.
