The Yass River site has been grown by Neil Macgregor and Fiona Wholahan for 28 years, this grower partnership with Hamish Young has come to a close, as the couple search for warmer weather and open ocean. A gentle sloping, north facing vineyard on granite soils. 30% whole bunch inclusion and maturation in French oak puncheons. Vivid pomegranate juice, cranberries and kalamata olive brine. Some oregano leaf and marjoram, rye seed and nigella spice. Staining mulberry fruit speaks boldly and oak influence is quiet with a gentle pressure to prop up the berries and black stone and rocky potting soil notes. A distinct wine with loads of fruit presence that would be ideal beside olive tapenade crumbled over ox heart tomato salad. With a toast to great growers of this country.
Shanteh cut her teeth at Sydney’s Award-Winning Quay restaurant where she worked for over a decade and was Head Sommelier from 2018 till 2022. She has been nominated for the Good Food Guide Sommelier of the Year award on three occasions and claims that her experience as a Len Evans scholar as one of the highlights of her career. Shanteh hosts her own weekly podcast ‘Over A Glass’ with the Deep in the Weeds Network and spends her time writing for various publications and judging at numerous wine shows across the country.
