Majella GPL68 2017

The wine is a tribute to George Patrick Lynn who, in 1968, gave permission to his sons, Brian and Anthony, to plant the first vines on their property in Coonawarra. George passed away at the tragically early age of 50 in 1976 and so did not see just how successful the Estate would become, but would no doubt be very proud of it and of this wine. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermentation begins in red stainless steel fermenters and is finished in new French oak hogsheads. There is further maturation for a year and a half in those barrels, before the very best are selected for this wine. Always a joy to see wines given time in an Estate cellar before release. The colour here is a deep maroon. Certainly, there is maturity evident, but the wine is still fresh and energetic. The nose reveals notes of dry herbs, animal skins, soy, charcuterie, licorice and sour cherries. A supple and seductive texture, there is good focus and a long lingering finish. The wine maintains intensity throughout and concludes with satiny tannins. It should easily provide pleasure for another eight to ten years. A cracking Coonawarra Cabernet.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
