Mitchell Wines McNicol Clare Valley Riesling 2012

Riesling is one of the great white wines for aging in a cellar. But many rieslings just don’t deliver in the end, with fruit fading and leaving just a line of fresh acidity, with not much else. But no such problem here with this a very attractive aged Clare Valley riesling which has built plenty of personality and character over the years while retaining some youthful vitality.

Pale gold and beautifully balanced with hearty guava, melon, brandied pear and honeyed aromas – this wine certainly delivers. It is followed by a dry, tangy and textural palate – there is power and richness of flavour with nutty and spicy elements adding delicacy and detail before a long, rounded finish supported by good acidity. It’s at peak right now, especially with a preserved lemon risotto.
